and blog it out.

The bag blog is an open exchange of ideas on sustainable packaging, green initiatives and the earth in general. Pull up a chair, have a read and have a say.

Let’s Talk Trash

You know we’re all about smart packaging so that there’s less garbage to begin with, but inevitably we’ve all got stuff that eventually needs to be discarded. That’s the genius behind TerraCycle: Tom Szaky founded this company based on the notion that even the things we throw away have value. That’s the kind of innovation that builds a brighter future, so we want to get Tom’s take on turning trash into treasure.

This is your chance to pose your “trashiest” questions for Tom; he”ll answer selected questions from you–the Bag The Box community–in his next blog post! So what do you want to know about TerraCycle? About recycling waste into useful materials? About building a small business from literally the ground (worm-poop fertilizer, anyone?) to an internationally recognized company? Post your questions as comments, and watch this space for Tom’s response!

    Dear Tom,
I have always come to question what you do when people send things in brigades that weren’t actually meant to be there. For example, random cellophane (that aren’t paper product wrappers) in the scott brigade, or a plastic type 1 cup in the solo cup brigade (which accepts only #6 cups). Please answer this question.

    Thanks!

Thanks for submitting your question! We’ll pass this along to Tom and post replies to the questions he answers right here on the blog the week after next!

I live in the Dominican Republic, have you considered bringing your business model to countries like mine?

  • http://bagthebox.com/ Bag The Box

Hi Faustoespaillat, Thanks for asking! We do sell Malt-O-Meal cereals in the Dominican Republic, but in boxes instead of bags. This happens for a couple reasons: some retailers won’t carry bags (as is the case in the Dominican Republic) and, MOST families only buy boxed cereal. We hope they’ll reconsider and try our cereal when they learn that cereal bags create 75% less packaging than a comparably sized cereal box that has a plastic bag inside. To see why “bags only” are better than “box plus bag,” check out the rest of this site. Thanks again for your question and we’re glad you like what you see!
