Let someone else do the cooking…sustainably
Everyone has those days – you get home from a long day’s work and just don’t feel like making dinner. The good news is that with a little planning ahead, you can have a list of options readily available that allow you to continue your sustainable lifestyle – even when dining out.
Our friends at GaiamLife.com have some great tips. For starters, you can learn a lot about a restaurant by simply looking at its physical building. Perhaps they have a special energy or design certification like ENERGY STAR or LEED. Either of these designations means the building was made with sustainable efforts in mind. Also, if you go to a restaurant deemed “vegetarian,” it’s a safe bet that it has the environment at top of mind in other ways.
Pay special attention to where the restaurant buys its food (this could be as easy as looking at the menu or reading restaurant reviews). This way, you’ll know where it came from, if it’s local and if it’s right for you and your family. Lastly, if you’ve got a taste for seafood, take a peek beyond the restaurant’s catch to ensure offerings are on the Eco-Best list from the Environmental Defense Fund.
