There’s an App for That!
You can do just about anything from your phone these days: order pizza, fill a prescription, even order your favorite cup of joe. But how about helping save the planet? Now that’s a great app.
We thought we’d put together a list of some cool eco-friendly apps for your phone. The best part? They’re free to download.
Bin It! 2.0
This app is brought to us in part by our friends at Earth911 and encourages people to recycle more by playing a virtual game (and as we learned from TerraCycle, gaming is catching on!). Players toss virtual plastics into a recycling bin while navigating obstacles like animals or breeze. Winners could get some pretty cool rewards from Recyclebank, including clothing, food and beauty supplies.
iRecycle
Speaking of Earth911, they have a pretty cool app that gives people recycling solutions on the go.
Carticipate
So far, it looks like this is only an iPhone app (and on Facebook), but it’s cool nonetheless. They call it an “experiment in social transportation” where you can virtually coordinate driving plans by telling people where you’re going and when, and the app matches “carticipants” along your way.
Love Food Hate Waste
We’ll remember this one the next time we have leftovers! Just search for this app in your iPhone or Android stores. It helps you plan meals and size out proportions. And if you really have no idea what to do with extra food, throw them in the virtual “blender” – this app will give you recipes based on what you put in. Impress your friends!
The Good Guide
This app is built by a team of nutritionists and lifestyle analysis experts that rate products and companies on their health, environmental and social performance. As with any apps like this, not all products are listed. But simply scanning in the barcode on a product will tell you if the company touts an eco-friendly message.
Smarter Shopping
We’re big fans of Phil “Supermarket Guru” Lempert, and he’s got an app to ensure that you will be, too. The “Smarter Shopping” app helps you plan, shop and stay in the know about food news. We think being eco friendly also means being a smart consumer.
